This Crazy Life
I found it difficult to write over the holiday break. Everyone was home, there were holiday things to do, and even though I would carve out small chunks of time for myself to get some writing done I couldn't ever really sink into the fantasy world I've created to do some quality writing.
I've discovered since I've started writing these novels that it's too difficult for me to start and stop in hour increments. I spend half the time in an hour trying to figure out how to get started again or rewriting the last few sentences that I happened to get down the time before. I'm not ever really able to make any progress unless I get three to four hours to myself.
Well, it's January 29th, and I still haven't been able to get that kind of time to myself.
My community college called me back in to teach this spring semester (which is quite unusual for an adjunct such as myself to get work both fall and spring semesters). Not only do I have work that I wasn't counting on (not that I'm complaining), but my childcare for my four-year-old fell through after only a week! For the majority of January I haven't been able to write because I've been playing mom and professor, sometimes being both at the same time because I don't have anyone to watch my son. One day a week he comes to my class and plays on the iPad while I instruct college students on the finer points of transitive and intransitive verbs and how they operate in sentence structure.
I think I might see the light at the end of the tunnel starting next week, it will be a full month later than optimal, but sometimes being a mom is more important than finishing novels.
